A comprehensive review of microplastics sources, fate, and distribution

چکیده :

Nowadays, the world encounters a severe problem with plastic pollution. Global production of plastic reached up to 300 million tons per year, and approximately 6300 million tons of plastic waste was generated from 1950 to 2015. Microplastics (MPs) (plastic particles smaller than 5 mm) are a significant environmental concern. They are persistent pollutants and widely distributed in all ecosystems ranging from the atmosphere to soil, from groundwater to ocean. Additionally, other pollutions tend to accumulate on the surface of MPs, and then MPs may be ingested by diverse marine fauna and finally end up in human food chains. Due to this scientific fact, a comprehensive assessment of these emerging pollutants is highly needed. This study purports to present helpful information related to MPs, including sources, distribution, fate, and try to fill a void of state-of-art of sustainable solutions to deal with this dangerous environmental contaminant by elucidating the finding of more than 70 articles mainly in the past ten years. The study guides a coupled human-environment system (CHES) perspective that may be useful for government policymakers and researchers.
